Members of the Edmund Rice Network [ERN] of schools, 45 in all, assembled on the 6th October for a conference on ‘Welcoming the Stranger’.
Br. Donal Leader and Br. Jim Donovan devised and delivered gatherings on the same theme earlier in the year to Brothers and members of the ERN. They were asked to deliver an updated version to representatives from the schools and guests knowing that they had a key role to play in raising awareness for parents and students. As in May, it was important to have members of the refugee and asylum seeker community with us in Swanwick.
Both Asylum Link Liverpool and Revive in Salford brought 4 of their group with them. Each was asked to share their story with one of four groups that made up the delegates from the schools. The groups were then asked to discuss and agree on any strategies that the schools could employ to make others aware of the plight of those seeking refuge in Western Europe. this brought a variety of ideas for action.
O God, we thank you for the life of Edmund Rice.
He opened his heart to Christ present in those oppressed by poverty and injustice.
May we follow his example of faith and generosity.
Grant us the courage and compassion of Edmund as we seek to live lives of love and service.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
