For more than two weeks, leaders from schools and ministries in the Edmund Rice tradition have been meeting in Lima, Peru.
Kindly hosted by EREBB and the Brothers’ Community in Peru, we have been working on our vision for leadership, our commonalities and how we will be taking our shared ethos forward under the banner of Edmund Rice Education Beyond Borders.
We have representatives from:
Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Bolivia, Peru, Argentina, Ireland, England, India, the US and many parts of Australia.
Amongst the highlights have been hearing from and meeting the ‘father’ of liberation theology Gustavo Gutierrez whose reminder to us of how we can interpret the church’s call to give preferential option to the poor was truly inspiring.
Also our visit to ‘Fe y Alegria’ school in the area of Canto Grande and their beautiful welcome they extended to us has made a huge impact on us all.
We have begun to know the trials of Peru and Lima; a poor country where some 11 million of its 30 million population reside in its over-crowded and chaotic capital. A trip on the bus is like a white-knuckle ride! The street food is fascinating and Peruvian cuisine is truly delicious.
Peru is a country where the literacy level has been improved amazingly in the past 20 years and also where healthcare has been invested in so that life expectancy is high and infant mortality low; it is a country that is ‘not waiting to get rich’ before it improves. We, in our privileged western societies could learn a lot from this model; prioritise what we invest in!
‘Caras del Mundo’ – ‘Faces of the World’ is the title of the symposium. It is truly a testament to our Global Network.
Many excellent contacts have been made and plans begun for further collaborations between projects such as camps, students and staff in our schools. Look out for many more exciting EREBB opportunities for you all soon.
O God, we thank you for the life of Edmund Rice.
He opened his heart to Christ present in those oppressed by poverty and injustice.
May we follow his example of faith and generosity.
Grant us the courage and compassion of Edmund as we seek to live lives of love and service.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
