This Monday, 2 July, Redcourt welcomed some VIP guests to school for a special lunch and assembly. Following connections made with some Syrian refugee families at the Syrian network Gathering in May, Redcourt wanted to host a visit to school for them. In the meantime, each class had made a ‘bag of love’ for the families. The bags contained, as representatives from each class explained, their favourite things about Britain and their area, postcards of places to visit, mementos and special items to the children such as soft toys and personal belongings which they wanted to donate as a sign of love and welcome to those newly arrived in the UK fleeing the atrocities of war. These bags were received with emotional thank from the families who were overwhelmed by the thoughtfulness and kindness of all the pupils and teachers at the school. As a return ‘gift’ Razan, a teenager from Syria sang 2 beautiful songs to the children in Arabic. you can see the video below of how that went.
Redcourt is well on its way to becoming a School of Sanctuary, one of the challenges we have set to all our schools for next year. Show refugees and asylum seekers you welcome them and stand as one with them.
Well done Redcourt on a fabulous effort.
O God, we thank you for the life of Edmund Rice.
He opened his heart to Christ present in those oppressed by poverty and injustice.
May we follow his example of faith and generosity.
Grant us the courage and compassion of Edmund as we seek to live lives of love and service.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
