Resilience, Recovery and Reimagining – a Reflection shared by Glenn Sanderson, Headteacher St Aidan’s Catholic Academy, Sunderland

Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

Matthew 19:26

How did the disciples cope after Jesus’ death? They had been prepared by him, they had been in the presence of the incarnate but they still weren’t prepared. His death must have caused them personal grief, it must have been shocking to them and destroyed the life they had come to know. How did they carry on?

We know that initially they didn’t, they hid. Their response was very reasonable, there were dangers outside and the future was unknown.

But God sent them the Holy Spirit!

Once they remembered that God was with them and the Holy Spirit would guide them, they were brave enough to go out into the world and carry on. Not just to survive but to thrive in a new Church which they created. They were indisputably successful.

Humble men, unprepared and full of grief. They built a Church.

God travelled with the disciples and gave them resilience, he helped them to recover from their grief and to reimagine the world ahead of them.

As we re-emerge from our own grief, shock and loss of stability we remember that with God, anything is possible.
