Staff travel during the first fortnight of our UK summer holidays normally the last week of July and the first week of August. In 2024 we are offering 8 places.
Staff travel from the UK as a group to Johannesburg O.R. Tambo Airport where members of the Edmund Rice Network from Pretoria will be hosting for the first few days. The first few days will be spent around Pretoria, Johannesburg and Boksburg visiting ER schools, learning about the Brothers’ work in South Africa, its history and struggles through colonial rule and the Apartheid system. This week includes time in Soweto.
From here staff will fly to either Bloemfontein or Cape Town, then spend time volunteering at Mariasdal School and a week with Justice Desk Africa volunteering in their projects and receiving human rights training.
Staff will get the chance to see some key sights too. The costings are £500 plus flights. (Return UK – SA and one internal flight). Participants book their own flights and pay for their own insurance. The Office team will help to prepare participants before they undertake an immersion and ensure that the group meet / have contact prior to their Immersion experience together.
Immersion is a life-changing experience. It opens your eyes to the realities of life in a totally different context to your own. Say ‘yes’ to opportunities, Africa gets under your skin!

O God, we thank you for the life of Edmund Rice.
He opened his heart to Christ present in those oppressed by poverty and injustice.
May we follow his example of faith and generosity.
Grant us the courage and compassion of Edmund as we seek to live lives of love and service.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
