Edmund Rice England - Presence . Compassion . Liberation

Province Leader’s Message

As we approach the great feast of Easter, it is fitting to pen a few lines on the occasion of the publication of the Presence magazine that celebrates the achievements of our Christian Brothers education centres in England. The risen presence of Christ Jesus and the promise of his presence among us, invites us to establish a human presence in all aspects of our lives.

Presence involves three levels of consciousness that hopefully we are able to cultivate in our schools and communities.

Awareness is first and foremost the aspect of presence that we nurture when we become conscious of ourselves and one another, leading to an appreciation of the giftedness of those with whom we connect. It involves a cultivation of inner silence where we connect with all that is going on both within us and within the other person.

Listening with our hearts is another essential dimension of presence. As the Little Prince said, “It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to

the eye.” Seeing with our hearts means that we come to a real presence both to ourselves and to those whom we love.

And finally, engagement is the third aspect of presence where we connect with one another in bonds of fellowship and service.

I congratulate everyone who has contributed to the publication of Presence and hope that the spirit of the Easter season will bring many blessings to all!

Brother David Gibson, European Province Leader
