As we approach the end of this term and travel though the Advent season, I want to take a moment to thank each and every one of you for your extraordinary support, compassion, and dedication to helping those most in need. Together, we have witnessed incredible acts of kindness from young people within our schools and across our Network that have brought light into the darkest corners of the world. Their example of bringing hope into what can appear to be a hopeless world at times, is truly inspiring and uplifting.
This term has been particularly special for Ann and I, as we had the privilege of visiting Sierra Leone and Liberia. During our time there, we were deeply inspired by the transformative work being carried out through the projects supported by Edmund Rice Development. From education initiatives to community-building efforts, these projects are beacons of hope, empowering individuals and lifting entire communities out of poverty. It was humbling to witness first-hand the impact of the generosity of people and the resilience of those whose lives are being changed for the better.
Advent, as Pope Francis reminds us, is “a time of joy and hope, to open our hearts to the coming of Jesus.” It is a season of preparation, anticipation, and light – a reminder that “the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it” (John 1:5). As we light the candles of the Advent wreath each week, we are reminded of Christ’s promise to bring peace, hope, joy, and love to all.
This message feels especially poignant this year, as we reflect on the work that is being done to bring light to the lives of those in need. Whether through education, healthcare, or the simple gift of a listening ear, the projects we support are embodying the Gospel call to care for “the least of these” (Matthew 25:40).
This term has also brought great sadness with the announcement of the closure of St Joseph’s Prep School at Christmas. This marks the end of an era for a school that first opened its doors in 1932 as part of the Senior School and became an independent entity in 1998. The decision to close has been a difficult one, driven by financial pressures that have increasingly challenged the sustainability of independent schools.
St Joseph’s has a proud and illustrious history. Generations of students have had the privilege of receiving their early education in a faith-filled environment that embodies the values of the Edmund Rice tradition. The school has been a beacon of excellence, with dedicated leadership and staff who have consistently nurtured young minds and hearts.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Mr Dan Hood, and his entire team, for their exceptional leadership and the compassionate way they have managed this challenging transition. Their commitment to the school and its community during this difficult time has been remarkable.
As we journey to the end of term my hope is that you have a blessed Christmas season with your family.
May the light of Christ fill your hearts and homes with joy, hope and peace.

O God, we thank you for the life of Edmund Rice.
He opened his heart to Christ present in those oppressed by poverty and injustice.
May we follow his example of faith and generosity.
Grant us the courage and compassion of Edmund as we seek to live lives of love and service.
