As the winter closes in, migrants in France have taken their few remaining chances to get across the Channel before the bad weather arrives. This is extremely risky and in recent weeks, 3 from a party of 5 have disappeared at sea. The Government (and Covid) have closed off all other routes making this practically the only way people can cross.

From the headlines, you could be forgiven for thinking that Asylum claims are up but in fact the numbers remain roughly the same as previous years. It is only the method of travel that has altered. Conversely, the Governments decision making process has halted, with many people stuck in hotels waiting for a decision. There are now around 70,000 people expecting a decision on their Asylum claim, with nothing to do and nowhere to go.

This is where we can help and schools in Liverpool and London got together to write to the Asylum Seekers, and latterly the Afghans, with messages of welcome and friendship. In stark contrast to Government Policy, we have been working with people to improve their language skills, get out into the open air and learn about their new home, and crucially, meet people from the UK.

Recent events have been tree planting trees with the North Wales Wildlife Trust and a regular slot at the Climbing Hanger. We’re looking forward to some events with the Choir and will be over in Manchester before too long, for a good sing song!
