From the Classroom to the United Nations: Edmund Rice Formation and Youth Advocacy in Geneva

In January 2026, staff and students from Edmund Rice schools and associates across England and Ireland travelled to Geneva to take part in a powerful formation and advocacy programme delivered through Edmund Rice International’s Geneva Office.

Across two full days, participants explored how the Edmund Rice tradition of education for justice connects directly with global human rights work. The programme introduced key UN mechanisms including the Human Rights Council, the Universal Periodic Review (UPR), the Convention on the Rights of the Child, and ways to embed the Sustainable Development Goals and human rights in the curriculum.

A highlight for many was visiting the UN to witness advocacy in action, including attendance at the UPR session. Staff feedback reflected a strong sense of purpose and renewed motivation for justice-focused education:

“This was a very valuable and worthwhile experience for us… It exceeded my expectations… focused, practical, high-tempo and ‘on point’.”

Alongside staff formation, students were inspired by the reality that young people can engage meaningfully in advocacy through ERI’s Youth Ambassador pathways:

“It was truly one of the most inspiring events of my life… and I cannot wait to act on it.”

Participants returned home encouraged by new knowledge, shared values, and a stronger sense of what is possible when schools connect faith, justice and education with global action.

Prayer of Thanks for Blessed Edmund Rice

O God, we thank you for the life of Edmund Rice.
He opened his heart to Christ present in those oppressed by poverty and injustice.
May we follow his example of faith and generosity.
Grant us the courage and compassion of Edmund as we seek to live lives of love and service.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
