Our joint appeal from all schools to raise money to fund two classrooms at a pre-school in the South African township of Mamelodi has been very successful. Since its launch in the summer, over £3,000 has been donated by both Colleges and Primary Schools.
Special mention must go to Naomi Jones and Niall Martindale, Sixth Formers from St Mary’s College, who raised £1000 by doing a sponsored run. Our initial amount has already been transferred to South Africa, where the management team at Christian Brothers College Mount Edmund school in Pretoria are kindly overseeing the build on our behalf.
Here is the cleared ground where our new classrooms will be constructed.
Fundraising continues; the boys at St Mary’s College are currently organising a charity football match to raise a further donation. Providing quality pre-school education in vulnerable communities, such as the huge township of Mamelodi is truly transformational, giving a healthy, safe start for babies and toddlers, childcare provision allows young mothers to work, and it provides local employment.
O God, we thank you for the life of Edmund Rice.
He opened his heart to Christ present in those oppressed by poverty and injustice.
May we follow his example of faith and generosity.
Grant us the courage and compassion of Edmund as we seek to live lives of love and service.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
