Race Across Sunderland: Running with Endurance, Walking with Hope

This year’s staff retreat at St Aidan’s Catholic Academy in Sunderland, themed “Race Across Sunderland,” invited our staff to reflect deeply on the words of St. Paul in his Letter to the Hebrews:

“Let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.”

Paul’s image of the race is not about speed or competition; it is about perseverance, faith, and purpose. In our vocation as educators, we are called to run this race with endurance, even when the path is steep and the challenges are real. For us in Sunderland, those challenges are not abstract; they are visible in the lives of the young people we serve.

Looking Out the Window: Edmund Rice’s Call 

Blessed Edmund Rice urged his followers to “look out the window” and see the poverty and injustice that demand our response. When we look out our own windows in Sunderland, we see a city ranked among the top 10% of areas of deprivation in the UK. Behind every door lies a story, sometimes of resilience, sometimes of struggle. Understanding this reality is essential for us as staff: it shapes how we teach, how we listen, and how we accompany our students on their journey.

Pilgrims of Hope: What Lies Behind the Doors 

In this Year of the Holy Door, Pope Francis called us to be “Pilgrims of Hope.” Our retreat challenged us to ask: What lies behind the doors of our students’ lives? For some, those doors open to warmth and opportunity; for others, they conceal hardship, uncertainty, and poverty. As educators inspired by Edmund Rice, we are called not only to open doors of learning but also to open doors of compassion, dignity, and hope.

The Race We Ran Together 

The “Race Across Sunderland” was more than a physical challenge; it was a spiritual metaphor. Each checkpoint reminded us that endurance is not about running alone; it is about supporting one another, sharing the load, and keeping our eyes fixed on the goal: a community where every young person can flourish.

Our route took us to local charities that serve the very communities our students come from:

• Pallion Action Group, offering grassroots support and community development.
• Young Asian Voices, empowering young people through cultural and educational programs.
• Love Amelia, providing essential items for families in need.

These visits opened our eyes to the incredible work being done to alleviate poverty and create opportunities. We also paused for prayer and reflection at Oaklea Convent with the Sisters of Mercy who have served the families of Sunderland for over one hundred years and with the Chaplaincy Team at St Mary’s Church, grounding our journey in faith and solidarity.

Carrying the Message Forward 

As we returned to school, we carried this message forward. We will run with endurance, looking out of our windows with courage, and we will walk through the Holy Door as pilgrims of hope, committed to transforming lives.
