Edmund Rice England - Presence . Compassion . Liberation

St Mary’s Preparatory School

Eco group

The Eco group worked with Ann Nichols from Edmund Rice England this term. One the activities was using the Ministry of Eco Education’s ‘Big Questions’ – these helped us to really think about the impacts of our day-to-day activities on the Earth. Such as ‘What does it take to make a cup of tea?’ We considered where the tea comes from, who grows and harvests it, how the tea leaves are processed and how they get to our country, how the clean water gets to our houses, where the electricity comes from, where we buy our tea, how it is packaged and if it is ‘Fair Trade.’  We also thought about how our own classrooms can become more sustainable.

Help for the Homeless

A group of children from St. Mary’s Prep took all of our generous sock donations to The Whitechapel Centre warehouse in Liverpool. We support their ‘Socktober’ campaign every year and we were once again astounded by the generosity of our school families. We took hundreds of pairs of donated socks to the centre in order to support the good work they do, and to help the homeless people in and around our city.  Have you ever thought why homeless charities appeal for so many socks and underwear?  For those who become homeless, sourcing clean, dry clothes is a constant issue. Having nowhere to wash your clothes or losing clothes when moving from place to place means a constant need for supplies of these garments. Let us pray for those who are homeless at Christmas.

Prayer

Prayer of Thanks for Blessed Edmund Rice

O God, we thank you for the life of Edmund Rice.
He opened his heart to Christ present in those oppressed by poverty and injustice.
May we follow his example of faith and generosity.
Grant us the courage and compassion of Edmund as we seek to live lives of love and service.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen.
