Students Rebuild – Art for Refugees Global Advocacy Project

This project was shared with us by Asylum Link Merseyside as a great project for our schools
to engage with, so we have – in a BIG way.

We have invited all Edmund Rice Schools across our global family to participate in this
important and educational global social justice campaign which raises awareness of and
funding for the global refugee crisis.
The organisation ‘Students Rebuild’ this term launched their Welcome Refugees art project.
The campaign lasts until June 2023 and students, by submitting a piece of art / postcard can
raise up to $1.6 million for UNICEF and other refugee aid agencies.

Why did we jump at this chance? This is a global campaign. As a global Edmund Rice
community, we are committed to the vision of One Voice for Justice. The NGO gives schools
access to lots of educational resources for staff to access to help them to deepen students’
knowledge about refugees. We can all participate in this together as one Edmund Rice
family. Edmund Rice England created an Edmund Rice Team on the website where schools
can submit art, build a team page about their learning and view the progress of the campaign on a world map.

By learning and creating artworks we have begun to raise funds
for this cause. It does not involve asking our students or their families for money.
If your school or community wants to take part you can log on to students rebuild.org using
Ann’s email annnichols.ero@gmail.com to log into the Edmund Rice Team account and
there you can find all the resources about refugees, information and ideas for creating your
art, how to submit it and view our team page with photos of our schools learning and
creating. There is also a certificate for participating.

When? Anytime – it is open from today all the way up until June.

This is such a great activity to get involved with. It does not cost any money. It involves
learning about and empathising with a marginalised group. It can be accessed by students
from any area and of any age. It can involve all of the Edmund Rice Schools as one family.
We have already had 500 entries from Brother rice High School in the US, many from
Colegio Stella Maris, Montevideo, Uruguay, St Mary’s Prep and College in Liverpool. Let’s
keep creating art and advocating for better treatment of refugees globally.
